September 19th 1921
Coming ‘round the corner onto Main Street
Can’t believe the heat
Two dogs and a cat
Run for cover.
Man on the creek bank
Lost his hat.
His mother says, what's that
Good luck
Dust and gravel spray
Always shows which way
The wind blows.
So it goes
Then the tire blows
Look out friends if you can
Scraping of a screen door spring
Door about to slam
Waiting on the next thing
Could be a banjo string
Bare fingers that’s the thing
Tapping out the rhythm
On the box, on the anvil
With a ball peen
Hammer swing.
Woman on the porch swing
About to sing.
Look out kid
Hear it comes again.
Dogs bark
Trucks park.
Wind blows
Through the fire hose
Truck door slams.
So it goes.
About
About the Plateau Valley Friends of the Library
The Plateau Valley Friends of the Library, incorporated in 1991 as a nonprofit corporation in the State of Colorado, is an independent organization established for the purpose of supporting literacy and library services and the Collbran Branch of the Mesa County Libraries. Being a small branch of the larger system and 45 miles from the Main Branch at 5th Street and Grand Avenue in Grand Junction, The Collbran Branch has enjoyed the support of the community throughout its entire existence. The Plateau Valley Friends of th Library is the formal expression of that support. The Friends group is dedicated to enriching the library experience for everyone who lives in Plateau Valley or is visiting or has passed through the Valley.
The Plateau Valley Friends of the Library encourages literacy, supports library programs, raises funds for library projects and volunteers for library related functions. The Plateau Valley Friends of the Library is a private non-profit organization which exists for the sole purpose of enhancing literacy and enhancing library services and the programs of the Mesa County Public Library District, especially those programs which directly or indirectly affect the Collbran Branch Library, the Mesa Leaf Library and the the people it serves and literacy in general. The Plateau Valley Friends of the Library raises funds, accepts gifts, grants, bequests etc. to meet the needs of the Collbran Branch, library services in Mesa, Colorado and the Mesa County Libraries for the present and the future.
The Plateau Valley Friends of the Library (Friends) is celebrating its thirtieth year of support to library and literacy services in Plateau Valley. On January 23, 1991 the Plateau Valley Friends of the Library was registered as a nonprofit corporation with the Colorado Secretary of State, for the purpose, as stated in the By-Laws of the Corporation:
The purpose of the corporation shall be to maintain an association of persons interested in literacy and to support the Collbran Branch of the Mesa County Public Library; to focus public attention on literacy and this library; to stimulate the use of the library’s resources and services; to receive and encourage gifts, endowments, and bequests in support of literacy and library services; to support and cooperate with the community; and to support the freedom to read as expressed in the American Library Association Bill of Rights. Said corporation is organized exclusively for charitable, religious, educational and scientific purposes, including, for such purposes, the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 (or corresponding provision of any future United States Internal Revenue Law).
The corporation is perpetual and will continue to support literacy, the Collbran Branch of the Mesa County Public Library system as long as there are readers and a need for support for literacy and library services in the Plateau Valley.
History
History
The Plateau Valley Friends of the Library was formed by a group of dedicated library patrons who were committed to finding a new location for the Collbran Branch Library.
In 1990 the administration of the Mesa County Public Library system had expressed the desire to move the library from its location in the basement of the Collbran Congregational Church. The library was housed in one large room with only one exit, which was deemed to be a safety concern in event of fire or other emergency. The Friends were instrumental in finding the library a new home in its current location in the Stockmens’ Bank Building at 111 Main Street in Collbran. Friends members helped in the negotiations for the transfer of the ownership of the building from the owners, Mike Martin and his family, to the Town of Collbran.
The building which houses the Library, the Stockmens’ Bank Building, was built in 1929. The Stockmens’ Bank welcomed its first customers to its new building in the fall of 1929. The Bank operated at the location at the corner of Main Street and Short Street until its assets were sold and the bank was closed in 1943. Subsequently, the building served as offices of former bank cashier Elsie Webber’s Webber Agency, for the U. S. Soil Conservation Service, Martin’s dental office and gift shops until 1991 when it became the home of the Collbran Branch of the Mesa County Public Library.
The Collbran Branch Library has provided library services to the public for thirty years at its 111 Main Street location and is getting stronger every year. The Friends have remained as supporters of the Library and continues to support literacy in the Plateau Valley and Mesa County and sponsor events which encourage literacy as was its intent from its inception in 1991.
